2. Converting Pine (or Other Text-based) Address-books into Other Formats

One simple DIY conversion method for Pine address books, or other comma-separated/tab-delimited files, is to use the address-book facility in Netscape Communicator or (for comma-delimited files only) Outlook Express.

2.1. Address-book Conversion via Netscape Communicator

Open the existing address-book file using the Communicator/Address Book menu option. Then use the File/Import/Text file (Address Book) menu option. Specify whether the source file is comma or tab-delimited, and use the screen dialogue to indicate the meaning of each field in the input file. After importing, the address book can be exported into a variety of other formats such as LDIF.

2.2. Address-book Conversion via Outlook Express

Open the existing address-book file using the Tools/Address Book menu option. Then use the File/Import/Other Address Book menu option. Specify the source file as Text File (Comma Separated Values). After opening the file, use the Change Mapping option to indicate the meaning of each field in the input file. After importing, the address book can be re-exported into other formats.
