3. Converting from Simeon/Execmail to other Formats

The address-book format used by Execmail (and its predecessor Simeon) is not supported by the various conversion utilities mentioned above. The Execmail address-book can be exported to a tab-delimited file from within Execmail's Address-book Organizer using its Address/ExportAddressBook menu option. The file created has entries of the form:

Name=

Chris Mussday<Tab>Alias=CM<Tab>Email=Chris.Mussday@college.ox.ac.uk e.g. Name=Chris Mussday<Tab>Alias=CM<Tab>Email=Chris.Mussday@college.ox.ac.uk

A DIY method for reformatting this into Pine (or other formats) can be through the use of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program:

  • Open the file in Excel, specifying tabs as the field delimiters.

  • Delete any rows relating to email groups and their members.

  • Use the Edit/Replace menu option to replace all occurrences of the text "Name=" by nothing. Repeat for each "Alias=" and "Email=" text.

  • Rearrange the columns. For example, to move column A to become column B.

    • Click on column heading A to select the whole column.

    • Use the Edit/Cut menu option.

    • Click on cell C1

    • Use the Insert/CutCells menu option.

  • Us the File/SaveAs to save the rearranged data, e.g for WING specify a new tab-separated file.

  • Finally, import the new file into the destination email client.
