S/MIME Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions)

Along with PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) protocol is one of the most widely used systems for providing secure email based on Public Key Encryption.

Support for the use of S/MIME-based encryption is included in recent versions of Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer. Unlike PGP, the generation of encryption keys and their registration on key-servers normally has to be done via a commercial Certification Authority such as Verisign.
