The power management monitoring and wake on LAN facilities

View OUCS service level descriptions

Computing services (OUCS) is working with departments and colleges to reduce IT-related greenhouse gas emissions and costs. IT support staff can install the FiDo software on their network(s) to plug into the power management monitoring (PMM) and wake on LAN (WOL) facilities.

The PMM creates a graph, accessed via a private web page, of how many computers are switched on throughout the day and night. The graph can be used to (a) estimate how much electricity is being consumed by idle computers, and (b) show individuals they are helping to reduce energy consumption by switching their computers off.

The WOL facility can be used to switch desktop computers on remotely, for instance:

  • Allow staff to switch their office computer on when working away from the office
  • Enable the HFS Service to switch computers on just before it performs a backup
  • Switch computers on automatically before people get to the office each morning

Having the facility to switch desktop computers on remotely should make it possible to switch computers off more often, without negatively effecting work.
