1. Overview of the PMM facility

The power management monitoring (PMM) is designed to encourage individuals to power down idle computers. We believe people are more likely to contribute to an initiative if they can see others are also making an effort. The PMM facility records basic information about the devices connected to a network, the information is gathered hourly, stored, and presented as a graph on a web page - below is a screen shot from the PMM facility installed at OUCS:

The PMM facility records how many devices have IP addresses
                            throughout the day and night. If a device is in sleep, hibernate or off
                            power saving modes (ACPI S3, S4 and S5) it will not normally have an IP
                            address. This graph shows desktop computer power management data for
                            OUCS during November 2009.

To offer the PMM facility ITSS must install and register FiDo software, (see later sections).
