6.1. Registering computers with the WOL service

Please note: The WOL service is not available for all desktop computers across the University, please ask your IT Support Staff for more details.

The central WOL facility needs to store a computers MAC address to be able to switch it on. You can register your computer with the WOL service by simply visiting the Update or Wake up a Wake on LAN client web page. The service will automatically retrieve your computers MAC address. Please follow the on-screen instructions to (a) allow the TSM HFS Backup service to switch your computer on (b) configure a time for the WOL service to switch your computer on automatically

  • To allow the HFS backup system to wake computers include the 'TSM Account name' in the uploaded file
  • To allow IT support staff AND another member to wake their own computer include the users 'barcode'.

IT support staff can get help with registering computers by contacting the OUCS Registration Service.

You can switch your computer on remotely by going to the 'Update or Wake up a Wake on LAN client' web page and pressing the 'Wake Up' button. You can also use the WOL service to schedule a time when computers are woken automatically e.g. every weekday morning at 8am. To set a wake-up schedule press the 'Update' button and follow the on-screen instructions. (You can tick the box 'On Vacation?' to stop computer(s) being switched on automatically but please note this will also mean they are not woken automatically for backups):

The main reason for using the scheduled wake-up feature is to switch computers on before users arrive in the morning. This should help reduce the time required to start using the computer each morning.

IT support staff can switch groups of computers on remotely using the Wake on LAN for IT Support Staff web pages.
