1. Introduction & Prerequisites

The latest TSM client (version 6.3.0.0) is suitable for Mac OS X machines running Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.7 (Lion) only but you can install the version 6.2.2.0 client on OS X 10.5 (Leopard) machines.

Once configured, the TSM software will allow you to perform a partial or complete backup of your hard disk to the Hierarchical File Server (HFS) at OUCS. Once a backup has been made, you can use TSM to selectively restore files or directories back to your hard disk.

This document provides information on obtaining, installing, configuring and running the TSM client software. The following conditions are prerequisite to being able to do this:

  • You are a registered user of the HFS. If not you will need to register for the HFS service and have a nodename and password assigned for your Mac before you can login to the TSM backup server
  • The installation, initial configuration and startup must all be done with an account with administrator privileges on the local machine.
  • A Mac running OS X Leopard 10.5 or above
  • A standard 10Mb (or faster) network connection to the University network or a connection to the Oxford eduroam wireless network (please see the wireless trial for more details). The HFS only supports VPN-based backup for systems registered as part of the VPN Backup Service trial.

Time Machine backups: Please note that the OUCS TSM client for Leopard will not back up your local backups made with OS X Time Machine.

Encypted backups: This latest TSM client software handles encryption of your backups differently from previous versions. If you have previously used the TSM client to encrypt your backups, please read practical differences in using TSM client encryption for further details.
