1. Introduction

The OUCS TSM client for Windows allows you to backup your data to and restore your data from the OUCS HFS Backup Service. The latest TSM client is supported on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP, Vista, 2003, 2008, 2008 R2 and Windows 7. Further details on exactly which versions of Windows are supported are available on our Windows Client Requirements page.

The TSM client should run on most modern PCs. You will need a standard 10Mb (or faster) network connection to the University network or a connection to the Oxford eduroam wireless network (please see the wireless trial for more details). The HFS only supports VPN-based backup for systems registered as part of the VPN Backup Service trial.

Finally, your machine will need to have been registered to use the HFS and have a Nodename (aka account name) and TSM Password assigned to it. If your machine is not yet registered and you do not have these details, you can register your machine for the HFS service here.

This software should be used to access backups only on the Windows platforms listed above. It should not be used with HFS accounts that have backed up files from any other type of operating system - doing so can cause those backups to become inaccessible. If you have any queries about this, please contact hfs@ox.ac.uk.

Please be aware that the HFS Service operates a default policy of excluding some types of files from the backup of Windows machines. In general exclusions relate to temporary files, other backup files, the Recycle Bin as well as Windows System Files and more - i.e. files that should not be restored or which should be restored from the Installation disk. For further information please read the rationale for excluding some files from backup, also a fuller listing of files excluded and in particular the section listing the exclusion of Windows Operating System Files. Some of these exclusions are negotiable, and if you feel you have good reason for having some of these files included in your backup, please contact hfs@ox.ac.uk with details.
