Installing the TSM Client for the Mac

2. Installing the TSM Client

The HFS TSM package should run automatically; if it does not, then browse to the downloaded file at /Users/yourusername/Downloads and double-click on it.

In newer versions of Safari, you can also click on the download icon in the top-right corner of Safari which displays a list of downloads:

Double-click on the downloaded file in the download list and then on the TSM installer package.
The installer launches as shown below:

Optionally, to confirm that the package is digitally signed by the University of Oxford, click the padlock in the top-right corner. This displays the certificate details:
Click the Continue button to display the 'Readme' file:
Click the Continue button:
Click the Install button; this launches the installation process, which requires administrative authorisation as below:
It is important to enter the name and password of an administrative account on your local machine. You are not being asked for your TSM password at this point. Clicking OK will then launch the installation process proper. The client software will be installed in the folder Tivoli Storage Manager under Applications.
The installation continues. After a short while, you will be prompted first for your TSM nodename and then for your TSM password - these were configured during HFS registration. If you can't remember your nodename or password, go to the Self-Registration Page where you will see your registered nodename and will be able to reset your TSM password if necessary.
Enter the TSM nodename and click OK.
You will then be prompted for the TSM password. Fill it in and click OK.
Click OK. (If the nodename is not recognised you will be prompted to go to the Self-Registration Home Page where you will see your registered nodename and will be able to reset your TSM password if necessary.)
Next you will now be prompted as to whether you want to run the scheduled backup service. If you intend to perform automatic scheduled backups in your allotted scheduled backup slot, then click Yes.
The installer will now inform you that it is about to configure the TSM client. Click OK to continue.
It may appear to be doing nothing for a while as shown below - please be patient for a couple of minutes.
If this is successful you will see the following dialogue box.
Alternatively, if there has been a problem configuring the client you will see a dialogue box with details. In either case clicking OK completes the installation. Now that the installation is complete, you can click on Close to close the installation window:
Please now proceed to the next section to run an initial backup.

4. Running an Initial Backup of your System

It is important to ensure that you run an initial manual backup of your machine for the following reasons:

To verify connectivity between your client and the HFS server
To verify that the software is working correctly
To ensure that we receive your data correctly
To ensure that any issues can be addressed as soon as possible.
