TSM Network Connectivity - Local Client Software Check

This section is aimed to provide some support on checking that additional software installed on the client machine is not preventing TSM Software from successfully running. The two most likely candidates will be:



2. Personal Firewall

A personal firewall is an application which controls network traffic to and from a computer, permitting or denying communications based on a security policy. Sometimes these firewalls will block traffic that should be trusted. Details on how to check these settings will vary between vendors and you should check your help files for the personal firewall products you are using.

Below are instructions that relate to the standard Windows Firewall available in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and beyond.



2.1. Windows Firewall

In some instances when Windows Firewall is installed it will restrict unsolicited incoming traffic in order to provide protection for computers against malicious users or programs. However, this may also prevent data from travelling between the TSM Client and TSM Server. Therefore, the user will need to make the changes listed below for TSM Client to function properly:

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Double click on Windows Firewall
  3. Click on the "Exceptions Tab"
  4. Click on "Add a program"
  5. Click on the "Browse" button
  6. Select the file "dsmcsvc.exe" from the installation directory - this should be found at c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\baclient\dsmcsvc.exe
  7. The focus will shift back to the Firewall Exception Tab once the executable is selected.
  8. Click OK to finish the process.


3. Anti-Virus Software

Some Anti-Virus Software packages also include a built-in personal firewall. Details on how to check these settings will vary between vendors and you should check your help files for the anti-virus products you are using.

The Anti-Virus software provided by Sophos through the Oxford University does not include any personal firewall software
