Automatic scheduled backups are possible in TSM through setting up and running the TSM Client Scheduler. On all currently available HFS installation packages, except that for Netware, there is an option to set up the scheduler on installation. Therefore, if you selected the option to enable the scheduler immediately when you installed TSM, there is no need for you to follow the setup instructions in this section.
It is strongly recommended that you run a manual backup of your data before running the automatic scheduled backups. This has the advantages of securing your data with the HFS and of verifying that your machine is correctly configured for backup. Please see our acceptable use guidelines for the terms and conditions of use of the HFS system and Initial Backups if you are unsure of how to run a manual backup.
Scheduled backups run at specified times or windows to ensure that each machine has a good chance of contacting the TSM server and to avoid overload at popular times. The scheduled window is allotted on a departmental basis and will be indicated to you at confimation of registration to use the HFS. For a full list of schedule backup windows see our schedule list.

The HFS is moving towards running the TSM Scheduler as a standalone, rather than managed, process. The current packages for Windows and Netware are of this type. Installation packages for Macs, Linux and Solaris currently still have the scheduler managed by another process, the TSM Client Acceptor Daemon. Old versions of the Client Acceptor Daemon have been found to have security vulnerabilities - whence the change. However, the TSM Scheduler uses a greater quantity of memory (RAM) when run alone, and consequently IBM recommend periodically stopping and restarting it.
