2. Getting started with backup

New users will want to look at the HFS further information page, the guidelines for acceptable use and the best practice page before registering for the HFS. The HFS uses Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client-server software to manage your data and once registered you are now ready to download and install the TSM client software for your computer. TSM clients are available for a comprehensive range of operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion, Linux and Solaris and NetWare. Once the software is installed you will need to know how to manage your backups before preparing for scheduled backups. You might want to use the GUI interface for Windows, Mac or Linux; or you may be more comfortable with the command line interface. And when the time comes if you do need to restore your data we have instructions on how to do so for Windows, Mac or Linux and command line interface.
