1. Oops

How many times have you accidentally deleted something you shouldn't have? It happens to us all. In those situations knowing that you have a backup is a welcome feeling indeed. OUCS operates a University-wide backup service for University staff members and postgraduates via the Hierarchical File Store (HFS) that is suitable for personal computers and servers alike. And the HFS doesn't just provide a backup service, it also provides an archive service for the long-term storage of data. The archive service is invaluable to projects who need to store data that is of long term value to the University; such projects should look at the University's Policy on Computer Archiving Services.

2. Getting started with backup

New users will want to look at the HFS further information page, the guidelines for acceptable use and the best practice page before registering for the HFS. The HFS uses Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client-server software to manage your data and once registered you are now ready to download and install the TSM client software for your computer. TSM clients are available for a comprehensive range of operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion, Linux, Solaris and NetWare. Once the software is installed you will need to know how to manage your backups before preparing for scheduled backups. You might want to use the GUI interface for Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris; or you may be more comfortable with the command line interface. And when the time comes if you do need to restore your data we have instructions on how to do so for Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris and command line interface.

3. Getting started with the archive service

Now that we know that the archive service is for the long term storage of data valuable to the University it is unsurprising that the first step in using the service is to request an archive project. Once your application is successful you will need to install and configure the TSM archive client and give some thought to these initial considerations. The TSM archive client uses the same software as the TSM backup client but there are subtle differences in its configuration and use so even if you have the TSM client software already installed for backup you will need to configure it for archive. As with the backup client you have a choice of whether to use the TSM archive client via the GUI interface for your platform or the command line interface.

4. New developments

The HFS service is in constant development and you can keep up with the latest news from the HFS team. Recent developments have seen access to the HFS enabled over wireless and VPN. The latter service is intended to meet the needs of those who work outside the University network for long periods and who still want to ensure that their data is appropriately secured using Oxford-run facilities.
