Reeling back the years with films from Oxford's past
Dreaming Spools, a media project run by IT Services to discover film footage of the citys history has been making headway. Project leader Peter Robinson said "For me some of the footage, particularly what we have recently found from the 1940s, is really exciting and unique." This summer IT Services have offered 8 week internships to current Oxford University students to work on a range of IT related projects. Dreaming Spools intern Hannah Lucas said "With the recent publication by British Pathe of 85,000 archived films to its YouTube channel, as well as the advent of the centenary year of World War One, interest in historical films is at a peak. We can use the footage to compare how traditons have survived throughout the years, in spite of adaptations to the time period." The project has recently featured in both the Oxford Times and Oxford Mail. The team are searching for footage of any length, from any time period prior to 1980, featuring the city and its inhabitants.
