Title of Service: IT Learning Programme (ITLP)
Status of Document: This document describes what the IT Learning Programme (ITLP) provides and its role within the Oxford University Computing Services (OUCS).
The IT Learning Programme is part of the Learning Technologies Group (LTG) at OUCS. The programme aims to teach full members of Oxford University (academic, non-academic, graduate or undergraduate) practical computing and research skills.
The IT Learning Programme provides the link between Information Technology and academic teaching and research. The skills taught to students and staff are a foundation for the research, teaching and support activities within the University.
The Thames Suite at OUCS is also managed by the ITLP.
2. Summary of ITLP’s responsibilities
Hours of Service
2.1 The service operates throughout the year. The scheduled ITLP course programme is available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday during term and outside of term when possible. The Thames Suite is available for use throughout the year. Support and advice is available thoughout the year
2.2 The ITLP is a team of nine that consists of: five IT Teachers; Course Support and Coordination Manager; and three Administrative Support staff.
2.3 ITLP delivers a schedule of over 150 different courses per term to approximately 12,000 attendees per year. In addition the ITLP offers closed and tailored courses for departments and colleges by special arrangement for which a charge is made.
2.4 The range of courses reflects ITLP’s understanding of the IT skills needed by University members inside and outside academia and those skills that departments and colleges have identified as being required to support learning.
2.5 Courses are available on a wide range of topics including research skills, programming, database design, academic use of office software and fundamental and beginner courses (ClickIT). Courses are delivered on Windows, Apple Mac and Linux Operating Systems
2.6 The core topics are developed and delivered by the ITLP teaching staff, who have a wide range of experience of teaching in H.E, F.E and industry.
2.7 New courses developed by the ITLP teachers are peer-reviewed, and undergo a process of continual enhancement. Courses are improved and developed in response to changes in software, new innovations, University projects and feedback from attendees.
2.8 Most courses are modular with the majority being three-hour sessions. Full descriptions are available on the ITLP website so that members of Oxford University can clearly identify what is appropriate for their needs. They can then map their own preferred path through the learning programme to achieve their desired skills.
2.9 Some modules are offered as lunchtime sessions. These cater for those members of the University who need a brief introduction to a topic, perhaps before enrolling on a longer module. These sessions are also a useful vehicle for more academic discussions of the application of IT.
2.10 Each course is accompanied by extensive support material typically a course book with notes, slides and course exercises.
2.11 Teaching materials from our popular courses are available online for members of the University to refer to and download for personal study. The ITLP Portfolio is found in WebLearn. This includes course books, exercise files, helpful videos and other support materials.
2.12 The ITLP is an AATCe – Apple Authourised Training Centre for Education.
2.13 The ITLP is currently a test centre for the Advanced European Computer Driving (AECDL). The ITLP is directly involved with the ECDL Foundation in the continued development of the qualification.
2.14 The ITLP supports those who have been on courses with drop-in advice sessions (Computer8) and where appropriate ongoing consultations.
2.15 The ITLP organises events such as Breakfast at OUCS for new staff members of Oxford University and gives Induction Talks to new graduates of around 45 departments at the beginning of each academic year.
2.16 In line with The Joint Skills Statement (2001) and Government's Robert's Report recommendations (2002), the ITLP in collaboration with the Bodleian libraries runs a workshop “Skills Toolkit for Research Students”, which supplements PhD students core research objectives in the area of IT skills and information skills.
2.17 The ITLP gives advice on innovative classroom technology.
2.18 For full University members the following charges apply to the open schedule. Charges are advertised at the time of booking.
2.19 Members of other organizations affiliated to Oxford University can attend ITLP courses subject to availability. Charges on application.
Administration and support
2.20 The IT teachers are supported by the ITLP administration team.
2.21 The ITLP administration is responsible for the timetabling of courses and the Thames Lecture Suite. They also handle initial enquiries, resolve booking queries, manage the provision of course materials, enrol students on the day, obtain post-course feedback, all of which ensure that the learning process flows smoothly for attendees and teaching staff.
2.22 OUCS has developed a sophisticated course booking and course administration system. This web based system offers a front-end self service course booking, automatic reminders etc for University members and a back end administration system which enables efficient management of course bookings and rooms and resources.
2.23 Members of Oxford University can check the availability of courses and book places on-line.
2.24 The ITLP courses are promoted through our website (http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/itlp). The ITLP distributes course planners to all departments, colleges and faculties. The ITLP also disseminates information through its course mailing list.
3. The Thames Suite
3.1 The ITLP manages and delivers its courses from the Thames Suite at 13 Banbury Road.
3.2 The Thames Suite comprises five lecture rooms where new technology is incorporated into the learning environment. Each lecture room has interactive whiteboards, a dual projection system with matrix-switching equipment to direct the required images to the correct screens, sound systems, high-specification computers, hearing loops and good accessibility.
3.3 The Thames Suite can be hired by other departments and external organisations for IT-oriented events.

4. Summary of client’s responsibilities
4.1 Members of Oxford University who wish to take a course must first book online (using Single Sign On), via email, or via telephone.
