An update and product roadmap from Dell

Cisco would like to provide an update covering latest innovations within existing wireless solutions as well as introducing our Cloud based offering from the recent acquisition of Meraki. Innovations within the existing product set include the Bonjour (mDNS) Gateway, Application Visibility and Control (AVC), new distributed data plane option providing up to 40Gbps of aggregate wireless throughput per edge switch [Aerohive-ish architecture] and lastly details of the recently launched Access Points, Controllers and updated Management Platform with an introduction to what will be coming over the next few months (e.g. 802.11ac). We will discuss these points along with market transitions of relevance to the education space. Meraki provides a further architectural deployment option. Meraki was built from the ground up for cloud networking. Meraki's cloud networking solutions are so easy to deploy and manage and are ideally suited for mid-market customers with lean IT organisations. Meraki's technology differentiation is built from the ground up around cloud with the ability to rapidly introduce new features to customers and deliver benefits such as ease of use and deployment enabled by its foundational technology as a scalable cloud based platform. We will discuss the Meraki proposition through live access to the Cisco Cloud Management Platform.

Moonshot is a unifying technology that can provide secure federated access to almost any kind of network application or cloud-based service: from SSH to resources, Exchange in the cloud and even federated desktop sign-in. It helps bridge the gap between current federated access solutions, enabling access to non-web applications, and uses existing infrastructure, to save on deployment costs. This briefing will introduce Moonshot technology to those new to the concept and provide more detailed information on its deployment, use cases and our impending pilot service.

Richard Carpenter has been having a good look at Windows 8 from the point of view of providing help desk support. In this 1 hour informal talk he'll highlight the (numerous) differences to previous Windows versions, show you how to navigate the new interface and explain how to set up email/contacts/calendar and eduroam.

The next HPC-SIG-Oxford meeting will be held on the 20th November from 1000-1600 hours in the Oxford eResearch Centre. In addition to our normal updates and agenda items, which this term includes an update from the network advisory group and items relating to software licensing, we are also holding a joint event sponsored by Dell in the afternoon. From 1-4pm we will be hosting a HPC Futures meeting to look at and discuss future trends in HPC. Agenda and speakers will be advised nearer the time.

This year the Support Services Conference (formerly the User Support Conference) is themed around Great Expectations. We won't be looking at an orphan and how they were tricked into getting debt, instead we will concentrate on the expectations staff, students and visitors have from IT services within a university. IT has experienced a number of challenges over recent years and, in turn, has made a number of changes. With the introduction of higher fees for the next academic year IT departments are going to be put under even more pressure to enhance the service they provide. The aim of the Conference is to bring together the different expectations from our various customers, look at how we can continue to deliver, keep up to date and manage our services in order to provide an excellent experience for all.

One of the key themes of this conference is around collaboration and strategic planning to understand how Janet6 might support your research needs. This event is aimed at research and support staff with an interest in network services and the way they support national and international research collaboration. It would also be useful for senior staff with responsibilities for research management and planning.

The Kellogg College Centre for Research into Assistive Learning Technologies in collaboration with OUCS are pleased to host a seminar on assistive technology in higher education, with speakers invited from JISC TechDis: the UK's advisory service for technology and inclusion in higher education. JISC TechDis have long argued that the key to enhancing access to the curriculum is the effective use of technology. By their very nature, resources in digital format can be accessed more independently and personalised more easily. Terry McAndrew and Simon Ball will review what has happened in the field of assistive technology in HE and FE in the past five years, and where it might be expected to go in the next five. The seminar will include ideas about where a university should put resources, how the devices and needs of students change and discussion of ongoing challenges for future research.
