The Shock of the Old 4: "e-Learning, The Student Experience"
One-Day Conference on Educational Technologies

University of Oxford
Said Business School
15th April, 2004

The Learning Technologies Group at Oxford University Computing Services held the fourth annual conference on educational technologies. Shock 4 will explored the problems and issues involved in designing and developing learning technologies with a focus on current and future needs of the student e-learner.

The papers focused on some of the following questions:

Evaluation

  • Do we truly understand what students do with online resources when they are presented with them?
  • How can we evaluate the student experience of online learning?
  • Do we consider the needs of the student before we embark on designing the software? What are the classic mistakes developers make ?
  • Are Virtual Learning Environments designed to suit the needs of the institution rather than the individual learner ?

Technologies

  • Successful technologies are often invisible to the user - how can technology make learning less of a hurdle?
  • Are modern students more comfortable with technology than their teachers?
  • Is there evidence of student resistance to new technologies ? Is there a saturation point ? Does e-learning promote student numbers over learning outcomes?
  • What have we learnt from electronic communication methods that are different from face to face teaching ?

Futures

  • What will we expect the classroom of tomorrow to be like ? What needs to change and what needs to remain the same ?

[More information and registration instructions will be added to this site as conference details are confirmed.]

As in previous years, this conference will be held the day before the annual Oxford University Beyond Conference, which will be advertised shortly.
