Full List of TCP/IP Services and Servers
This page contains a directory of TCP/IP services offered by OUCS, both official and unofficial. The IP name/number of the machines that offer the service together with relevant port number are also supplied.
- Network servers:
- DNS (Domain Name System): resolvers
- DNS (Domain Name System): authoritative servers
- WINS (Windows Internet Name Service)
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
- HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) Proxy Cache
- NTP (Network Time Protocol)

- Status of principal services
1. DNS (Domain Name System)
1.1. Caching Resolvers
| Server name: | resolver0.dns.ox.ac.uk | resolver1.dns.ox.ac.uk | resolver2.dns.ox.ac.uk |
| Server IP number: | 129.67.1.1 | 129.67.1.180 | 163.1.2.1 |
| Port number: | 53 (TCP/UDP) | ||
| Status: | Official |
These resolvers should be used by all client systems across the university network. Each client should use at least two for redundancy (preferably not resolver0 and resolver1 together, as these are on the same subnet), and there is little reason not to list all three where possible.
1.2. Authoritative nameservers
| Server name: | auth0.dns.ox.ac.uk | auth1.dns.ox.ac.uk | auth2.dns.ox.ac.uk |
| Server IP number: | 129.67.1.190 | 129.67.1.191 | 163.1.2.190 |
| Port number: | 53 (TCP/UDP) | ||
| Status: | Official |
If you require zone transfers to a departmental slave server, please contact hostmaster to arrange for access and for your server to receive NOTIFY messages upon updates.
3. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
Mail servers which restrict incoming SMTP connections should allow the following netblocks if they wish to receive mail from Oxmail:
An alternative notation for a /28 netmask is 255.255.255.240
Clients which require an outgoing mail server to be defined should use smtp.ox.ac.uk. Mailing Lists are handled via the mail alias maillist.ox.ac.uk
4. RADIUS
This service is used by 802.1X authentication servers that authenticate users based on the OUCS Remote Access account. Access to these servers is restricted to those registered in the 802.1X Device Registration tool. You must configure both authentication and accounting to both OUCS RADIUS servers.
6. NTP (Network Time Protocol)
10. Electronic Mail
11. User WWW Server
| Server name: | users.ox.ac.uk |
| Port: | Accessed by FTP transfer |
| Status: | Official |
