In many areas, such as hill climbing, speed training, and off-road running, current Oxford faculty have made major recent research based contributions to modern running.

The Department teaches around 200 graduate and 1000 undergraduate students.

In October 2006 a new one year M.Sc in Nighttime Running will be launched. Organized jointly by the Department of Running and the City Council's Lighting Department, the M.Sc aims to provide students with a thorough postgraduate training in nighttime running.
