1. Start the Xconfig program (Start menu/Commands/Hummingbird Connectivity vx.y/Exceed/Xconfig or Start menu/All Commands/Hummingbird Connectivity vx.y/Exceed/Xconfig on Windows XP.)

  2. Double-click on [Communication] and ensure that the Mode is set to [Passive]. Click on OK to close the Communication dialogue box.

  3. Double-click on [Security] and under the Host Access Control List section, select the [Enabled (no host access)] option. Click on OK to close the dialogue box.

  4. Double-click on [Screen Definition] and under the Window Mode section, ensure that the [Multiple] option is selected. Change the Server Visual setting to [PseudoColor]. Click on OK to close the dialogue box. Close the Xconfig window.

Now you need to set up XStart to start an xterm window on the Linux system. This will log you in and give you a command window which you can use to start programs etc.

  1. Start the Xstart program (Start menu/Commands/Hummingbird Connectivity vx.y/Exceed/Xstart or Start menu/All Commands/Hummingbird Connectivity vx.y/Exceed/Xstart on Windows XP.)

  2. Now change the settings as follows. First, set the Start Method to [Secure Shell (TCP/IP)]. Note that this method of connection is only available once you have installed the Hummingbird Connectivity Security Pack. Enter your Herald username into the User ID box, enter linux.ox.ac.uk in the box next to Host and change the Host Type to [LINUX]. In the Command box, enter xterm -sb -ls ensuring that it is exactly as written here. Enter a Description such as Connect to OUCS Linux Service.

  3. Now go to the [File] menu and select [Save]. Type in a name for the Xstart file, such as OUCS-Linux and click on Save.

  4. To test that your settings work, on the Xstart screen, click on the [Run!] menu item. You should be prompted for a password. Enter your Herald password and click on OK.

  5. Various things should now happen. The Exceed program itself will start (you should see the splash screen), and the first time that you connect you will see a message entitled Secure Shell Client telling you that The authenticity of the host 'linux.ox.ac.uk' cannot be established. Click on Yes to continue to connect.

  6. You may see a further message that reads something like /usr/bin/X11/xauth: creating new authority file /u3/j/abcd0123/.Xauthority. Again this message will only appear once, and you can click on OK to close it.
  7. An xterm screen should appear, looking similar to the one shown here. You are now authenticated to the Linux service and can type commands into this screen to run other programs.

  8. To make it easier to connect, you can create a shortcut for your Xstart settings. The easiest way to do this is to go back to the Xstart screen and click on the [Install...] menu item. You will be prompted for a Command Group Description which is the name of the Command group under the Start Menu where it will create the shortcut. You can either choose an existing program group from the list (e.g. Hummingbird Connectivity v7.1) or type in a new name to create a new program group. Once you have chosen a name, click on OK.

  9. A folder will appear displaying the shortcut you have created. At this point you can copy the item to the Desktop if you like. To connect in the future, access this shortcut from the Commands section on the Start menu. It will have the same name as the description that you used when you first configured Xstart.
