The Network News service provides support for message-based discussions with other internet users. In many regards it is a cross between web discussion forums and mailing lists - discussions ("threads") can take place between many people, and are categorised (into "newsgroups"), archived, and conveniently downloadable. In addition to supporting many world-wide newsgroups, the service hosts a number of Oxford-specific newsgroups.
Users can access the service using client software that supports the NNTP protocol - this is available in most modern email clients and many web browsers.
Use of the Network News service has declined considerably in recent years, and will be reviewed annually against the cost of continued provision.
The News service was available for use in 1999.
