2. Microsoft New Products Update

Microsoft have launched new versions of many of their products over recent weeks, the Computing Services Shop will stock these just as soon as we can obtain the required media.

Microsoft Vista Business is initially being distributed via IT Support Staff, this is a trial distribution service with OUCS providing the KMS (Key Management Server) that is needed for the regular authentication of the Vista Business product. Full details of this have been distributed to IT Support Staff and can be found within the ITSS Wiki.

The Computing Services Shop will distribute "Work at Home" copies as soon as these are released to us. Further advice regarding upgrading to Vista will be available from OUCS shortly.

3. Software Agreements

Nag HPC Libraries

Following an additional contribution from the Oxford Supercomputing Centre the Nag High Performance Computing Libraries have been added to this agreement (running until 31st July 2008)

Ingres

OUCS and BSP have renewed their licence to run the Ingres Database.

Our rental agreement now runs until 31st December 2008, the rental actually allows us to run Ingres (up to version 2.6) throughtout the University and so those of you previously ganted a licence can continue to run Ingres without further payment.

Please note that this is a rental and support contract running up to and including version 2.6. From version 3 Ingres became an Open Source product.

At the moment we have no plans to extend this rental beyond 31st December 2008

4. Zenworks Consultation

The following message has been sent to the primary IT Support Contact in units holding a Zenworks maintenance subscription

OUCS has purchased Novell Zenworks and makes it available throughout the University via a joining fee.

We also purchased a maintenance plan which runs from 1st August 2004 until 31st July 2007 to provide updates and support for the product, this is funded partially (at around 50% ) via your contribution.

This year we have the option to purchase a new maintenance plan which would be fully funded by contributions from the users of the software.

I would be grateful therefore if you could answer the following questions:

1. Are you using Novell Zenworks? if so:

2. How many users are recorded in your NDS tree?

3. Do you require a maintenance plan?

[ To clarify: your existing version of Novell Zenworks will continue to be licensed for perpetual use even if we do not take out a new maintenance plan ]

The cost for the existing 3-year maintenance plan was c £17,000

Once I have an estimate of the numbers of units that are interested I will indicate the amount that you would be expected to pay.

Please let me have your reply by 31st January 2007.

Contact richard.saxton@oucs.ox.ac.uk if you have additional comments.

5. Novell Netware Consultation

The following message has been sent to the primary IT Support Contact in units holding a Novell Netware maintenance subscription

OUCS has purchased Novell Netware and makes it available throughout the University.

We also purchased a maintenance plan which runs from 1st August 2004 until 31st July 2007 to provide updates and support for the product.

This year we have the option to purchase a new maintenance plan which would be funded by contributions from the users of the software.

I would be grateful therefore if you could answer the following questions:

1. Are you using Novell Netware? if so:

2. In which units of the University are you running a netware server?

3. Do you require a maintenance plan?

[ To clarify: your existing version of Novell Netware will continue to be licensed for perpetual use even if we do not take out a new maintenance plan ]

The cost for the existing 3-year maintenance plan was c £25,000

Once I have an estimate of the numbers of units that are interested I will indicate the amount that you would be expected to pay.

Please let me have your reply by 31st January 2007.

6. SPSS / SAS Consultation

The following message has been sent to the registered users of SPSS, SAS and all IT Support Staff.

On 31st July this year our rental agreements for both SPSS and SAS come to an end.

[ our SAS licences expire on 31st July and SPSS on 30th November ]

Eduserv Chest are currently working to negotiate new agreements for both these products and we expect the terms and fees payable to become known nearer the renewal date.

OUCS manages a "site license budget" which is currently used to fund SAS for Windows and SPSS for Windows and Mac, other platforms are funded by departments as required.

Generally it is expected that this budget should be used for the provision of software that is used widely throughout the University, for some time now it has been used entirely in funding existing contracts.

In order to ensure that we have sufficient funds to renew or replace the 5 year Sophos contract in 2008 and ideally to release funds for new products it is necessary to consider carefully each existing contract as they reach the end of their term.

We would normally hope that each software product that we fund covers a different discipline and is widely used throughout the University.

Since SPSS and SAS have a similar target user base we must consider how appropriate it is to continue funding both of these products.

Current costs under the existing agreements are SAS £ 7050 pa and SPSS £10575 pa.

Figures for registration are:

SPSS – usage figures

................................................. Site Registrations .....Personal Registrations

Dec 2005 - Dec 2006 ........................888 .............................447

Dec 2004 – Dec 2005 .......................556 ..............................419

Dec 2003 – Dec 2004 .......................502 ..............................372

SAS Academic Analysis Suite – usage figures

.................................................Site Registrations .....Personal Registrations

Dec 2005 - Dec 2006 .........................51 ...............................16

Dec 2004 – Dec 2005 .........................28 ...............................21

Dec 2003 – Dec 2004 .........................87 ...............................30

You will see from the registration figures that there appears to be a significantly greater use of SPSS than SAS over the three periods examined.

Thus my initial thought is that we should renew SPSS using site licence funding but that SAS should either be ceased or funded by those units that require it.

Those units that currently fund Linux and VMS versions of SAS for their own use will be contacted separately for a commitment regarding their continued use of SAS, their departmental licence would also enable them to run SAS on a Windows platform.

Other units that wish to continue using SAS on a Windows platform would need to take out an appropriate departmental licence. (Under the existing agreement the cost is £1469 pa).

I would be pleased to receive your comments and thoughts on the above to enable me to make an appropriate proposal regarding the spending of the site licence funds.

Please reply to this email by Monday 5th February 2007.

Contact richard.saxton@oucs.ox.ac.uk if you have additional comments.
