2. Microsoft Campus

The Microsoft Campus Rental Agreement was renewed for a further 3 years on 1st August 2006. Details of this agreement, which allows departments and colleges to run selected Microsoft Products, funded centrally under the terms of a Campus 3.4 agreement, can be seen at:


The list of Microsoft Products that are available to you remain unchanged; although as previously noted Frontpage and Publisher are no longer be available for installation as stand-alone products, only as part of an Office Program Suite.

You should also note that if any of the products are used under the terms of "work at home" then installation media and licencesfor new implementations must be obtained via the Computing Services Shop. Volume Licence Keyed media must not be taken home for this type of installation.

3. New Agreements

Oxygen XML Editor

OUCS has obtained a licence for the use of the Oxygen XML Editor, due to the cost required to satisfy individual licence numbers, OUCS has taken out a site licence which can be used by all staff members.

Adobe CLP

The Adobe CLP agreement has been renewed for a further 2 years from 1st October 2006, this enables Adobe and Macromedia products to be distributed via the Computing Services Shop. As previously these products are only avaialble for use on University owned machines.

4. Recent Rental Agreement Renewals


Mapinfo rental has been renewed until August 2007. Version 8.5 of this software is expected to be released to us under this agreement in the near future.

5. Forthcoming Rental Agreement Renewals


Students are currently offered copies of Maple free of charge, this is funded via an annual add-on rental payment, funded centrally, to the site licence for Maple which is itself funded by departmental and college contribution.

A number of colleges and departments are unaware that the continued existance of the site licence is vital to the continuation of free of charge student usage.

Those colleges and departments whose students make use of Maple are thus encouraged to join the shared Maple licence, which would allow you to use Maple on your college and department owned computers either strand-alone or via a network.

The annual rental agreement for Minitab runs from 1st January each year, however we must sign a renewal with the next few weeks. Existing subscribers will be contacted directly to accertain their requirements for 2007.

6. Free Licences


The University has held a distribution licence for the Web Browser Opera for some years.

Following the release of Opera 9, licencing is now free to all users. Version 9 can be downloaded as required from:

7. Other News


Following financial support from the Oxford Supercomputing Centre together with the departments of Chemistry, Maths, Engineering, Earth Science and Physics; the NAG Serial Libraries agreement can now be used by all Members of the University.

SPSS 13 for Mac

This version is expected to be issued to us under our Higher Education Rental agreement in the near future.

SPSS 14 for Win updates

We have been advised by a colleague in the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit of a problem using the "select" statement within SPSS. This bug is corrected by application of the 14.0.2 patch, which can be downloaded from the SPSS technical support site.

Acrobat 8

Adobe have informed us that the version 8 of Adobe Acrobat will only be licensed in stand-alone copies. Concurrent versions will not be sold from version 8 onwards.

Novell SLES 10

Please be advised that Novell does not currently allow us to use SLES version 10 under the terms of our Netware Maintenance. Version 9 of SLES is the latest version that we are able to run.

Writenote Trial and Refworks

Following a request from one of our departmetal users, Adept Scientific who supply us with Endnote, have arranged for a free trial to take place of WriteNote, their web based research and writing tool.

You should also be aware that the libraries service will shortly announce that RefWorks, an online bibliographic management program, will be made available as one of their electronic resourses.
