In 2008, Telecommunications introduced VoIP to many departments and colleges throughout the University. Currently, there are two types of Cisco VoIP systems available; analogue and Cisco Series digital telephones. Students and staff members that require standard telephony features will be able to use normal analogue handsets on our Cisco VoIP network. Cisco series digital telephones are feature-driven VoIP devices and are recommended for busy offices, help desks and reception areas.

Existing telephone extension users can upgrade to VoIP at a cost of £70 plus the cost of the handset, or new lines and numbers can be purchased at a cost of £200 plus the cost of the handset. This is under the current pricing model. When the 2012 VoIP Strategy is adopted by the University the price model may change. These costs are not yet known.
