NotesThis poem reflects Edward Thomas' decision to give up his job as a map reading instructor and to apply for a commission with the possibility of a posting to France. His concern was the financial plight of his family, and he was hoping for a Civil List Pension. He was granted the lump some of £300 in June 1916 instead. The manuscript is untitled but is labeled 'As the team's head-brass' in 'Edward Thomas Collected Poems'.
