22920A: Edward Thomas, Drafts of Poems, 1914-15

A notebook signed on f. 162v ‘Edward Thomas/Wick Green/Petersfield. The book is used in reverse and has been foliated accordingly. On ff. 1v–27 are drafts of 27 poems occurring between numbers 7 and 74 in The Collected Poems, dated between 14th Dec 1914 and 23rd May 1915. Blank for 27v except a few lines of after rain on f. 159v.

A notebook signed on f. ii Edward Thomas/Wick Green/Petersfield/26 xii 11. Contents list on f. iv: (1) Evening Chapel (2) Sigmund (3) The Pilgrim (4) Dialogue (Jehovah &c)' Original ff. 1–11 torn out. On f. 1 is the end of the essay 'The Pilgrim'; on ff. 1v–7 a dialogue between P and T and Jehovah whom they visit. On ff. 7v–41 are drafts, mostly written on rectos, of 27 poems (occurring between nos 103 and 131 in The Collected Poems of Edward Thomas dated between 4 March and 5 July 1916, mostly written in ink, some in pencil, with revision in both ink and pencil. On ff. 29v–30v are trigonometrical sketches. Blank from f. 41v. This is the manuscript designated M2 by R. George Thomas The Collected Poems, p. xxiii.ii, 125ff. , f. 1 numbered '12' by Thomas, ff. 2–7 numbered 1-6 by him in second use of the book, 157 x 100mm. Blue cloth tooled with a gold fillet.

Typescript working copies of twenty–three poems (poems 1-5,7–10,14,26,30, 56,76–7,79,81–5,87–8 in R. George Thomas (ed.) The Collected Poems of Edward Thomas), with collation of texts by R. George Thomas (ff. i–vi). Two copies are included of poem 77 (ff. 34–7), one marked 'unamended', and poem 56 (ff. 38-45), one marked 'unrevised'. Poem 'The Combe' (f. 2) is signed 'Edward Eastaway'. The typescripts were used by Thomas for revision during his final gathering of poems for Poems published in 1917 under the pseudonym 'Edward Eastaway' and nine of the poems (ff. 2,8,13,16–19,26–7, 33–45) are included in the volume. These are the typescripts designated JT by R. George Thomas, The Collected Poems

44990: Poems (62) of Phillip Edward Thomas

Autograph, with a few alternative drafts. Hand written in black ink, revisions in ink and pencil. Arranged chronologically from 24th December 1914 to 24th May 1915 (poems 11–75 in The Collected Poems missing number 70 “The Glory” – there is a torn out page where chronologically the poem should have been). There are 77 folios, folio 4v, 5v, 7v, 10v, 17v, 39v and 54v are also written on (mostly revised versions). Blank from f. 77v.

A notebook signed and dated from 25 June 1915 to 24th December 1916. 71 folios, 4 folios with notes on the reverse, 1 cover leaf. Hand written in black ink with very few corrections. Few poems with titles but correlate to poems 72–143 in The Collected Poems. Blank from f. 72 except as noted above.
