| Notes | Manuscript in pencil and pen in Ivor Gurney's hand. Many lines of the poem have been crossed out, as Gurney works out the ending of the poem. It is mentioned in a letter of September 1918 to Marion Scott. Makes reference to Gurney's friends the Harvey family. Included in 'War's Embers' (1919). Written while Gurney was a patient at Lord Derby's War Hospital being treated for shell shock. Found in a burgundy notebook containing fair copies of poems made by Gurney. It appears to have been compiled primarily in 1918. |
