| Notes | Letter requests the presence of James Parnell so that he can be awarded his medal in a civil ceremony. Part of a collection relating to James (Jimmy) Arthur Parnell. He had a tough life as a child. One of two children whose parents had both died by the time he was 14 years old. He looked after his sister, and to earn more for them he joined-up at the age of 16 (two years under age) - private, 39503, East Yorkshire regiment and then transferred in to the West Yorkshire regiment. He won the Military Medal in March 1918 during the Allied retreat - wounded - he lost two fingers from his right hand. |
