| Notes | A photograph of the ruins of a church at Péronne; and a drawing of soldiers in battle, inscribed 'Our latest ordeal. When will it end?!!!' Edmund Blunden notes that the drawing was made by the 1st MEO at Gouzeaucourt, March 1918, and added later in pencil that 'His daughter Anne Innes did come to see me at Long Melford on 7 Nov. 1964; he is still living, aged nearly 80. He was made a prisoner of war shortly after he drew this.' The book was compiled by Blunden with the intention of providing complementary photographs supporting the narrative and poems of 'Undertones of War' (1928), and was inscribed 'E.B. New Year, 1935' while Blunden was living in North Oxford, a neighbour of Graham Greene. |
