This photographs was taken in 1900, and shows a young-looking Edward Thomas with his son Merfyn. He and his wife Helen went on to have two more girls, Bronwen and Merfanwy. Thus, when war broke out in 1914, Thomas's decision to enlist was important not only to him, but to his dependents.
