| Notes | The attached photographs are of a Turkish Rangefinder which belonged to a Lieutenant Robert Froud. The box was carved by his bat man whilst in the trenches during the war. Bob Froud was from Seaham Harbour in Co.Durham and after the war he returned and lived with my grandparents. He gave this and his baton (which I also still have) to my father when he was a child. My father always called it a Turkish rangefinder but I am not sure if the writing is Arabic. My father was born in 1924 and his favourite stories were of Christopher Robin which Bob Froud read to him. In the Christopher Robin birthday book the entry on his birthday was A soldier's life is terrible hard. Editor's Comment: Turkish Artillery Director, used to measure angle of direction and elevation (parts missing). Engraved with Turkish numbers etc. written in Arabic script. |
