| Title | New Testament of Edward Watson |
| Notes | John Porter's great uncle (brother of his maternal grandfather) was Serjeant 2110 Edward Ernest Watson, 1/4th (Royal Fusiliers) Bn. London Regiment. He was killed on the Somme on 9th September 1916 and his name is on the Thiepval Memorial. This was his pocket New Testament. Editor's Comment: New Testament: 'The Soldier's | Quiet Moments Bible | Reading | in the New Testament.' (London: Army Scripture Readers Society). The pencilled inscription suggests that Sjt. Watson served for a time in the 2/4th Bn. of the same regiment. The 1/4th Bn., as part of 56th (London) Division, were taking part in the Battle of Ginchy, the fifth phase of the Battle of the Somme. |
