| Notes | Private Harry Hewson's memories of life in the trenches during WW1 (with the 5th Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry) were transcribed by a young Army Cadet. Editor's Comment: Harry cannot have sailed to France in 1914 with the 5th Battalion, as they remained in England until May 1916. Only the 1st and 2nd battalions of the regiment arrived in France before May 1915, and neither landed at Calais. Nor can he still have been serving with the Guards Division (which he joined in 1916) when he found himself in Lille at the Armistice: the Guards were concentrated around Maubeuge, about 40 miles away. |
