Hockaday in Service Dress and as a boy; of temporary wooden grave, Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone and Lydney Cricket Club Memorial; card from a memorial service; rare shots taken near the front and in the trenches (including the sandbagged entrance to a dugout): note the 'cap comforter' and rubber boots often worn in the line. Temp. Captain Sydney Reginald Hockaday, 2nd Bn. Monmouthshire Regiment, died on 2nd September 1916 from wounds received on the 30th August during the shelling of Piccadilly Trench, South of Potijze (Ypres Salient). He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. |
