| Notes | The photo is of my grandfather Albert Edward Ville (sitting front left) who was called up in July 1917 and became a rifleman in the Queen's Westminster Rifles (16th London). He was wounded on 23rd August 1918 at Elverdinge near Ypres whilst a signalman in the 22nd London. He suffered a number of wounds and after first aid was 'taken back to blighty' to recuperate in Cardiff. I have also submitted separately a photo that was taken after his return whilst he was recovering and a photo of my grandfather's brother, William Ville, who also served in the army during WWI and survived. My grandfather wrote a short account of his life and I've also submitted separately an extract from this that describes his experience of being in the army. Editor's Comment: Note the crossed flags on lower left sleeve, indicating 'signaller'. Pte. 555020 Albert Edward Ville, 16th Bn. (Queen's Westminster Rifles) London Regiment, served overseas in the 22nd Bn. (The Queen's), service no. 698199, and 11th Bn. (Finsbury Rifles), London Regiment. |
