| Notes | Photograph of John Manchester during his RAF service. During the First World War, Manchester (Service Number 240698) served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment as a corporal and later a sergeant, and was awarded the DCM. He was severely gassed in the trenches, but went on to serve in the RAF during the Second World War. Part of a collection relating to John Manchester, deposited by his daughter-in-law, who describes him as a very modest man. |
